Robert Cywes was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa where he completed medical school and general surgery training. In 1989 he spent a year at Columbus Children's Hospital in Ohio before moving to Toronto, Canada to complete his surgical training. In Toronto, Dr Cywes specialized in minimally invasive surgery then did neonatology at Toronto's Hospital For Sick Children. He also obtained his Ph.D. in transplantation immunology at the University of Toronto. He completed his Pediatric Surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. He was recruited to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. as a pediatric surgeon. Here Dr Cywes joined the renown Vanderbilt Fetal Surgery Program and was active clinically and in the laboratory as a fetal surgeon.
The Cywes family personally experienced the anguish of parenthood as their prematurely born twins spent 2 months in the NICU. Cywes was working 100 hours a week and his wife, Irene, would email him pictures of his twins, Alex and Claire. Robert Cywes took a snapshot of his life and knew he needed a change. So, the family moved to Jacksonville where he joined the Nemours Group to develop a minimally invasive pediatric surgery program at Wolfson Children's Hospital.
Now Cywes is starting his own practice. His motto is ability, availability, affability.
His goal
is to personally serve the children and referring doctors of Jacksonville.
"I really enjoy caring for children because they don't have any other agendas, they just want to get better."

Specializing in Minimally Invasive Surgery
For Neonates, Children and Adolescents
Our philosophy of minimally invasive surgery extends well beyond the operating room. Our aim is to provide minimal disruption to the patient and family's life without sacrificing the highest quality in peri-operative and surgical care.
We do this by individualizing patient care to meet the needs of each patient and their unique surgical situation. We spend time with our patients, listen to and address their concerns and fully inform them as to what they can expect during their period of surgical care.
We are attentive to the needs of our referring doctors by providing direct access to the surgeon and comprehensive, timely feedback about their patients.
When patients require urgent or emergent attention we can streamline their progress through the hospital system if we are contacted prior to admission.
As a small personalized practice we are able to offer our patients and referring doctors
· state-of-the-art surgical care
· time to listen and talk with patients, families & referring doctors
· accessibility by patients & physicians
· direct & personalized care
· personal physician-to-physician referrals, discussion & feedback
· streamlining ER and hospital visits with advanced notice
·
Putting the full diversity and depth of our training to work, we offer comprehensive pediatric surgical care including:
· neonatal, pediatric and adolescent surgery no matter how simple or complex, using minimally invasive approaches when appropriate
· consultation and long-term follow-up of patients with new and existing problems
· urgent and emergent consultation for pediatric surgery problems in the ER and after admission to Wolfson Children's Hospital
· antenatal consultation with parents of fetuses with known or suspected anomalies

Obesity among children and adolescents is increasing at exponential rates. Obesity as a disease has a tremendous impact on the overall health of individuals and affects every physiological system negatively. For a significant proportion of morbidly obese adolescents (Body Mass Index>35) conservative weight reduction methods are ineffective. In 2003 the American Pediatric Surgical Association established an Obesity Surgery Taskforce aimed at studying the effects of obesity surgery in adolescents 12 years and older. By combining our expertise in pediatric laparoscopic surgery and scientific research, we were uniquely suited to develop our Adolescent Obesity Surgery Program. This structured multidisciplinary program offers intensive comprehensive treatment of all aspects of morbid obesity including psychology, nutrition, exercise therapy, surgery and as-needed specialist therapy of co-morbid problems. Patients and families participate in an allied active obesity patient group. Candidates for obesity surgery are offered laparoscopic banding surgery or laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery selected to meet the needs of individual patients. We follow our patients lifelong and closely work with the patient's own pediatrician/family doctor or offer pediatrician follow-up with our team doctor.
